Cabinets built to measure earn their money in this city because the walls they go against are not straight. Huntington Beach has 78,003 housing units at an average density of 2,446.5 per square mile, and the bulk of that is stick-built tract housing from the decades when the city grew from an oil and farming town into the most populous beach city in Orange County. Tract framing is fast framing. It was never intended to present a dead-flat plane to a run of cabinets fifty years later.
The practical consequence shows up the day the boxes go in. A stock cabinet run is a series of fixed widths, and where the fixed widths stop short of the wall the gap gets a filler strip. Every filler strip is a place where you paid for cabinet and received a piece of trim. In a house where the wall also leans, the filler has to be tapered, and a tapered filler next to a square door is the detail that tells everyone the kitchen was bought rather than built.
A drawn-to-fit run does the opposite. The gap between the wall and the tall pantry is a cabinet, not a strip. The scribe that takes up the lean sits on the back edge of a stile where nobody looks, and the doors in front of it stay square. That is most of what custom buys in practice, and it is why the first thing that happens on any job here is somebody standing in the room with a laser rather than reading a floor plan.
Coastal Southern California is one of the gentlest wood environments in the United States, and the number that proves it is published by the USDA Forest Products Laboratory. The Wood Handbook prints month-by-month equilibrium moisture content for US locations, and the nearest listed station to Huntington Beach, Los Angeles, reads 9.4, 10.2, 10.5, 10.4, 11.0, 11.7, 11.6, 11.2, 10.8, 10.6, 9.8 and 9.9 percent across the twelve months. The whole year fits inside a 2.3 point band.
Compare that with the same table's other entries. Fresno runs from 15.8 percent in January to 7.4 in July, a band of 8.4 points. Chicago spans 12.3 to 15.1. Las Vegas drops to 3.7. Wood moves when the moisture around it changes, so the size of the annual swing is the thing that opens panel gaps, cracks mitres and sticks doors. On that measure the Orange County coast is close to the easiest address in the country.
Salt air is still a real material problem here. It attacks unprotected steel, so hinge and runner plating, screw choice and any exterior joinery genuinely do matter within a few blocks of the water in Sunset Beach and Huntington Harbour. What it does not do is wreck interior cabinet carcasses, and any quote that leans on that claim is selling worry rather than cabinetry.
Expect roughly $500 to $1,500 per linear foot for genuinely custom cabinetry in this part of Southern California, which puts a 25 foot kitchen run between $12,500 and $37,500 installed. That band is published by a Los Angeles cabinet maker for the LA market and is the closest printed benchmark to Orange County that exists; the same guide describes Los Angeles pricing as roughly 25 percent above a national range of $400 to $1,200 per linear foot. Nobody publishes an Orange County specific per linear foot figure, so we label this one honestly as a Los Angeles area range rather than pretending it was measured on Beach Boulevard.

For the narrower jobs there are figures published for Huntington Beach itself. Laminate refacing of a standard 12 cabinet kitchen is estimated at $1,576 to $2,482, which is $131 to $207 per cabinet. Finish goes on to a coating specification that complies with the South Coast AQMD limits in force in Huntington Beach. Rule 1136 caps clear and pigmented topcoats at 275 grams of volatile organic compounds per litre, and the shop's product data sheets have to show it.
Cabinets are set level and plumb, scribed to the real walls, and fixed into framing rather than into drywall alone. Then doors and drawers get adjusted so reveals stay even, which is the half day that decides whether the kitchen looks built or looks bought.

Kitchen cabinets are expected to last up to 50 years, according to the National Association of Home Builders study of home component life expectancy prepared with Bank of America Home Equity in February 2007. The same study gives medicine cabinets 20 years or more, garage and laundry cabinets 100 years or more, and closet shelves a lifetime. The authors attach two caveats that matter more than the headline number: life expectancy is greatly affected by the quality of maintenance, and changing consumer preferences often mean things get replaced long before or long after their practical life is over. In Huntington Beach the second caveat is usually the one that decides it. Plenty of boxes from the tract-building era are structurally fine and get replaced anyway because the layout stopped working.
No, not for the cabinets themselves. The California Residential Code lists work exempt from permit and the list reads, word for word, "Painting, papering, tiling, carpeting, cabinets, counter tops and similar finish work." What ends the exemption is everything around the cabinets: moving a sink, relocating a gas line, adding or moving circuits, opening a wall, changing a window. Those are permitted trades whatever the cabinets are doing. The exemption also does not authorise a code violation, and a local jurisdiction can amend the list, so confirm your specific scope with Huntington Beach Building and Inspections before work starts rather than after.
No, and the federal moisture data says the opposite. The USDA Forest Products Laboratory Wood Handbook publishes month-by-month equilibrium moisture content for US locations, and the nearest listed station to Huntington Beach, Los Angeles, sits between 9.4 percent in January and 11.7 percent in June. That is a 2.3 point band across a whole year. Fresno, two hundred miles inland, swings from 15.8 to 7.4, a band of 8.4 points. Wood moves when the moisture in the air changes, so a narrow band is a gentler environment for a panel, a door and a mitred joint than almost anywhere else in the country. Salt air is a real problem for exposed steel hardware and for exterior joinery. It is not the thing that wrecks interior cabinets.
Published Huntington Beach estimates put laminate cabinet refacing at $1,576 to $2,482 for a standard 12 cabinet kitchen, which works out at $131 to $207 per cabinet. That figure assumes a 10 by 12 foot kitchen and breaks down as roughly 26.2 hours of labour at $978 to $1,729, materials and supplies at $545 to $683, and an equipment allowance of $53 to $71. Real wood veneer refacing is a different product at a different price and is estimated at around $2,000 to $6,000, with larger kitchens reaching $7,000 to $10,000.
Reface when the boxes are square, dry and laid out the way you want them, and replace when any one of those three is false. Refacing changes doors, drawer fronts and the visible face frame or box edge. It cannot move a cabinet, change a cabinet's width, fix a swollen particleboard sink base, or turn a bank of doors into drawers. If your complaint is that the kitchen looks dated, refacing at $1,576 to $2,482 for a 12 cabinet kitchen is extremely good value. If your complaint is that you cannot reach the back of the corner cabinet, or that there is no drawer big enough for a stockpot, refacing will leave you with the same kitchen in a nicer colour.
